My baby is so stupid and ugly.

In these days of e-mails and text-messages, many of you may know that
LOL is the abbreviation of " laughing out loud".

You put LOL at the end of funny statement in your text or e-mail.
It's just like (笑い) in Japanese.

Watching an American TV show, I came across an interesting episode
that really happened to people's life, relating the word LOL.

Let me introduce following exchanges of text-message between a mother
and a son.

First、 mother sent a text to her son to let him know his aunt's death.

「I'm in the hospital. I'm sad to tell you that your great aunt just passed
away.(LOL)」

Son was surprised and answered it back.
「Why is that funny?"」

「It's not funny,David. What do you mean?」

「Mom, LOL means laughing out loud...」

「Oh my God. I thought it means Lots of Love. What shoud I do?
I sent that to everyone.I have to call everyone to take it back.」

I'm afraid it may happen to everyone since a lot of brand-new words
and abbreviations keep appearing.

Well, what I think now is that I'd rather use old-fashioned words
than make embarassing mistakes.

How do you feel about it?

Years later when my son reached the adolescent stage, another
problem happened.

He stopped going to school regularly.

The reason was not clear.
But I felt that he couldn't adjust himself to the school system that's
focusing on how many students they can lead to enter famous
Universities.

He insisted that he would go to a technical training school after
graduation for the purpose of pursuing his interest, cooking.

I tried hard to persuade him into going to University.

In the course of thinking, I started to realize that I wanted him to go to
University partly because I just wanted to satisfy my own pride,
hoping to feel comfortable with situation around me.

OK....wait.
What matters most is whether he is happy or not.

I completely gave up my tiny pride and tried to become happy
for his decision.

Well, bringing up kids is not an easy matter.
There have been ups and downs, and downs and down where
you have to struggle a lot.

But personally I'm sure that being a mother helped me to open
my eyes with which I could see the whole world widely and flexibly.

I would never judge people or anything by what I could see
on the surface.

I could always see and respect what you really are.

Just for the record, my son has been working in Chinese restaurant
for three years now.

The way he has been in training is quite amazing.

That is like something I'd like to dare to say that
" I'm really proud of him."

Every time I hear the word " Mother", I cannot help feeling strong affection
coming up inside me, especially when thinking of my lost mother.

However, " Being a mother" is quite another thing.

For me that was struggling, survival and eye openers through many
experiences at the same time.

At the early stage of being a mother, the struggle was like lack of
sleeping time or the idea that"Oh, I became a milk machine just
living for a new born baby."

But that wasn't a big deal at all.

My kids started to show their own characteristic quality as they grew
playful and wild, naughty and active.....especially my younger boy
turned out to be a devil monkey.

Accordingly the teachers of kindergarten or elementary school
complained about his unstable high-energetic behavior.

" Your son kept talking during classes."
" He has never done any homework."
" He forgot to bring every stuff he should bring to school."

You know what?
I was not the type of person who could easily apologize
because as an adult you don't have to do that so often if you live
properly and carefully.

My life has extremely changed.
And I eventually became a professionally skillful apologizer.

Among all those rigid teachers, luckily I met a generous teacher like
Miyamae-sensei.

At one PTA meeting, she personally spoke to me,

" You know, he lost one of his pair of indoor school shoes the other day
don't you?"

I knew that.
I remember in the morning he was in such a hurry to school that he
just put them on top of the textbooks inside his school backpack and
ran away.

He must have dropped one of his pair while running.

And Miyamae-sensei continued.

" After I lent him a pair of slippers, I've noticed him walking in a quite
awkward manner. So I came closer to him to find out......
he was putting one of his shoes on his left foot and one of slippers
on his right foot."

She kept talking while I was being speechless...

" I got it. He must have thought it would be better to put at least one of
his shoes in stead of wearing a pair of slippers that he"d borrowed all the
way."

And she concluded,

" I respected his idea and let him do that all day long.
He must have a lot of trouble walking that way, though."

I was totally moved by how she tried to understand my son and
how generous she was toward him.

A together woman like her can't keep together when it comes to Love.

What are ordinary Bhutanees like?

The professor Ueda said that people are all calm
and gentle partly because they value such state
of mind over any other ones.

Peaceful state of mind is the very attitude with
which people aim to grow.

People also believe in great relationship.
Relation with people and their surroundings is
regarded as an essential element that brings happiness.

Professor told that even the poorest people in the
village were willing to give her warm hospitality
and consideration during her stay.

So what is the great difference between Bhutan and Japan?

It is said that Bhutanees perform several roles with
a good sense of balance.

However a role relating to economic activities is seen
as temporary one because that will end when you retire.

They put much more value on life-time roles such as
being Parents, son & daughter, and Friend.

And flexible structure of society allows each role to
be performed properly.

This is completely different from Japanese situation
where productive activities tend to occupy most of
people's life.

The professor also described that Bhutanees know
better than to pursue their desire for getting
what they want.

They know such desire is endless and because of that
they will never be satisfied with it.

That is just like there will be no end to economic
growth.
How far are we going to seek after economic growth?

Can we find any significance in one growth after
another with no end?

Professor uniquely compared the profit-oriented nations
to a bicycle and Bhutan to a tricycle.

Compared with bike, tricycle will never fall down even
if you stop pedaling.

If you catch sight of something attractive, you can go
slowly or even stop for a while to enjoy it.

Happiness.....the term having a touch of seemingly
unscientific, subjective and private issue, it might be
a great hint to make our country better and healthier.

Needless to say , country consists of each people.
How can country be happy when people don't feel happy.

The study of Happiness is sure to help people's
viewpoint reflected on country's policy.
That is the point where numerical analysis of GNH will
make a lot of difference.

Combination of traditional relative data and fresh
subjective data might make an innovative standard
being established.

I think that is the process through which we'll be able
to see opening to the new brighter future.

I have to admit that the theme"Happiness" is too profound
to cover by making a few minutes speech.

But I hope my speech just as an introduction to the theme
will help myself and hopefully all of you consider a real
happiness more seriously .

Thank you.
