ブータンについてのスピーチ原稿の３回目、英語バージョンです。
What are ordinary Bhutanees like?
The professor Ueda said that people are all calm
and gentle partly because they value such state
of mind over any other ones.
Peaceful state of mind is the very attitude with
which people aim to grow.
People also believe in great relationship.
Relation with people and their surroundings is
regarded as an essential element that brings happiness.
Professor told that even the poorest people in the
village were willing to give her warm hospitality
and consideration during her stay.
So what is the great difference between Bhutan and Japan?
It is said that Bhutanees perform several roles with
a good sense of balance.
However a role relating to economic activities is seen
as temporary one because that will end when you retire.
They put much more value on life-time roles such as
being Parents, son & daughter, and Friend.
And flexible structure of society allows each role to
be performed properly.
This is completely different from Japanese situation
where productive activities tend to occupy most of
people's life.
The professor also described that Bhutanees know
better than to pursue their desire for getting
what they want.
They know such desire is endless and because of that
they will never be satisfied with it.
That is just like there will be no end to economic
growth.
How far are we going to seek after economic growth?
Can we find any significance in one growth after
another with no end?
Professor uniquely compared the profit-oriented nations
to a bicycle and Bhutan to a tricycle.
Compared with bike, tricycle will never fall down even
if you stop pedaling.
If you catch sight of something attractive, you can go
slowly or even stop for a while to enjoy it.
Happiness.....the term having a touch of seemingly
unscientific, subjective and private issue, it might be
a great hint to make our country better and healthier.
Needless to say , country consists of each people.
How can country be happy when people don't feel happy.
The study of Happiness is sure to help people's
viewpoint reflected on country's policy.
That is the point where numerical analysis of GNH will
make a lot of difference.
Combination of traditional relative data and fresh
subjective data might make an innovative standard
being established.
I think that is the process through which we'll be able
to see opening to the new brighter future.
I have to admit that the theme"Happiness" is too profound
to cover by making a few minutes speech.
But I hope my speech just as an introduction to the theme
will help myself and hopefully all of you consider a real
happiness more seriously .
